Dear Friends

As per a PTI news, Railways Minister Mamta Banerjee has indicated that she received a favourable response from PM on coins on 150 years of Tagore. The coins are likely to be issued on 7th May at Vishva Bharati University in bolpur in WB. Denominations are not known now. PM will be invited to the function. Bangladesh PM Shaikh Hasina has also given a proposal for joint celebration of poets anniversary.

You may recall that we started the discussion on coins on Tagore as far back as 6th October 2009.

Sanjay is quite right to refer to the older thread about possible themes. There are still some pretty good ideas left there.

When I was in Mumbai for the Coin Fair, I was told by a Big Dealer of Proof and UNC Coins that RBI is not issuing VVIP sets anymore. I think that's the reason why there are no VIP sets for the recent issues.

I am also getting mixed signal regarding Tagore coin. It is confirmed that it will be issued. But can't say definately that it will be issued on Sunday.

Sorry Abhay Ji your info about VVIP is incorrect. I have seen VVIP of almost all the recent issues

OK, then maybe they are not reaching the dealers, as the VVIPs have also become smarter these days. ;)

Dear Friends

The coins on Rabindra Nath Tagore were finally released yesterday by our Finance Minister Sh Pranab Mukherjee. I attended the function in Delhi. While releasing the coin, Sh Mukherjee said that "The coins are small tribute to one of the greatest artist of modern civilization"

Although I could not get the coins, I had the satisfaction of holding them in my hands for few moments before actual release by the dignitaries.

The coins show beautiful portrait of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore (front facing) with flowing beard.I was disappointed to note that the 150 Rupees coin is of same diameter (and hence weight) as 100Rs coins. I expected it to be little larger than 100Rs coin. It was of quaternary alloy. 5 Rupee coin appeared to be of Cu-Ni (not brass and SS).
