Found this(Braille) coin in circulation yesterday from Hyd mint. Mumbapuri would be proud of me :D

It was a surprise to see how fast these coins can dull. They would not have been in circulation for long.

Great news MS. It has been a while that I came across any commemorative coin in circulation here in Ahmedabad.

That is bad news. Re 1 and Rs 2 2007 FSS coins in circulation are still available with the shine and luster. So was this coin put through some chemicals or was it in any other way mishandeled? Only time and more coins can tell.

I don't see too many either. Found this one and Jagath Guru FSS last week and nothing in the month preceding that.

2007 and 2008 have lost much of their shine and luster here. I wonder why?

This particular coin I found is not yet that badly effected but it has strange drag marks on the surface closer to the edge on one side, like it has been squeezed out.

I'm surprised that you are saying that. My non-collector friend in Bangalore has amassed 7 Basaweshwara coins, 5 Lal Bahadur Shashtri and 4 Jagath Guru coins in 2 months there amongst others for me.

I used to see Basaweshwara commonly a few months back but not so much now. I have seen SBI/ONGC/Shastri here in the past but haven't found any recently. Bangalore is a very large city, I guess I am in the wrong neighbourhood for commemoratives :) Also my coin supply is limited to the change I receive which narrows my chances.

Well, being a software engineer may just mean that you are handy with computers ;) This may sound odd, but computer skills help if you are a collector.

I think the best way to collect is by trading your coins with other collectors. Of course, prices will be lower, but you may spend about the same after postage. The trick is that by swapping coins, you learn things no school or university will teach, such as:

  • Building and maintaining a social network
  • Investing in stocks of coins
  • Estimating demand for newly issued coins
  • Customs procedures
  • Life in other countries

All of these go smoother if you are handy with computers. So your challenge is to convert your knowledge into a network of trading partners, who want newly issued Indian coins and who have the coins you are interested in. I am sure this site is one of the best places to learn how to do that. Have you had the time to go through the "wanted" and "swap" boards yet?

Hey Peter
I was indeed impressed by the words of wisdom, on how I could use my profession for my passion. Not many people can do it successfully. I'm getting acclimitised with the Swap boards, it looks interesting. At least I can trade Indian coins for other foreign country coins.

Can you give me insight on how to pack the coins while sending it abroad. Also Speed Post or normal snail mail should be used for sending coins?

I guess the prices would be different in different places; for example, wouldn't coins minted by Mumbai mint be cheaper in Mumbai, since their circulation would be higher at that place?

None of the bimetallic issues circulate in Mumbai,I can confirm that! Dealers are selling the Bhabha bimetallic for 25 bucks, and for the two earlier issues, the price is 15-20 bucks each. The 2009 issue is bit more difficult to get,I have been told that the mintage of 2009 is 1.5 million only.(nothing official)..
The nickel brass coins do not circulate either, yet have to find commemorative Ni-brass coin in change, but did receive a couple of regular Ni-brass coins in change last week..

The only Rs 5 coins seen out here are the Ni-Br 2009 Bombay..err... Mumbai mint coins which I encounter frequently. FSS have all but dissappeared while the Ni Rs 5 do crop up once in a while. As for the Rs 10 Bi-metalics, i have yet not got one in circulation.

My experience has been just a bit different. All the above coins mentioned by numismatica do circulate, but in very limited amounts (maybe as they are new coins making them more striking for any common person) . Hence this calls for more patience and more number of eyes/hands to keep a look out for specific issues in circulation.

Since this is a thread aimed at collecting coins from circulation (in India),  I would say please have patience and one will be rewarded! :)

There is no harm in buying coins (if one must) but i hope its purely for hobby' sake and not investment, every time some one says buy a  coin as the price will always appreciate, one will be wise enough to remember how the stock market (or any commodity' prices) swings!

MS

I have not seen the bi-metallic coins commonly circulate in Bangalore either. I say commonly because I have never received it in change. One of my friends runs a local business and he has seen a few coins in circulation. Also panwalas and other local shopkeepers have these coins but its novelty prevents them from giving it out as change.
