you might be onto something there, though I'd expect it to have a mirror image rather than it be blank.

Not blank, not a new year token, not a bracteate ...

I guess since there was no answer that it isn't the temple of Janus...
So 2nd guess is a camp gate.

Not the temple of Janus, nor a camp gate, nor the prow of a ship as suggested by PM ...

It looks like it might have had a loop removed or something, so could it have been some sort of military identification tag.

A dog tag?
though I might be barking up the wrong tree with that one.

If this isn't it, I won't guess again because I have no idea. Is it a horse?

No, but you probably wouldn't have to shell out very much to station one in your collection ...

I thought my last couple of responses might have fuelled some lateral thinking ...

Now I am really curious to find out the answer... Mr Google did not throw up anything interesting, the ship on the other side is the most common hit.

That's so close I'll grant it.  It's actually part of a series of replicas produced by BP.  This one has a legend in Dutch, reading ANCIENT GREEK (and) ROMAN COINS - BP COLLECTION.  The centre text reads X / ROMAN AS / 3rd CENTURY BC.

I got the 'wrong' answer that I was hoping for - the prow of a ship - early on in the discussion, but was also hoping the incorrect design detail might have been picked up at the same time.  The other side of this piece (true, technically the obverse in this case, on reflection, since it identifies the issuer) is shown below.

Also have a look here:

http://rg.ancients.info/medusa/replicas.html

(3rd item down) for another in the series issued in France. Peter tells me there was an English set, too.  They appear to date from the 1970s, according to the above website.

Pretty cool  :D  I have some weltspartag tokens with old coin designs on the obverse....nothing like Greek or Roman coin designs though.

Difficult question!

Difficult question!

I second that. :P Had absolutely no idea apart from the obvious (which Martin said was wrong). But the solution sure was interesting and quite amusing ...
