£2 1997 : Mint sets only

Although the official word is this - some 1997 £2's did enter into circulation.
A contact in Jersey found several - too many to be from broken up sets.

They did sell them separately from the sets. I have one that is in a capsule and case.  Got it for £4.50 from a coin shop in Jersey once.  Not sure how many were sold like this but it's possible these were made up from the ones your contact found.

A year ago I also got a 1997 Jersey £2 coin off eBay for £10.  The seller presumably had no idea it was rare and didn't mention the date in the listing header, so it probably passed many potential buyers by.  I was originally outbid but the winning bidder was in Spain and for some reason the seller wouldn't send there, so I got a second-chance offer on it.

Another 1997 Jersey £2 turned up on eBay.  Item 162171151575.  The seller presumably knew little about it as it was listed as "2 Coin Bailwick [sic] of Jersey".  The photos included both sides of the coin and the listing did include the date.  It started at a very low price and only picked up bids towards the end.  I did a dying-seconds bid of £9.36 (the 64p postage taking the total to £10).  I was outbid by another last-second bid. 

I wasn't too bothered as in total I have three in my collection, but again it proves that this date really isn't as rare as it might seem.  Elsewhere there are two sellers each trying to flog the 1997 Jersey Brilliant Uncirculated set (that of course has the 1997 £2 in).  Both are buy-it-now, one at £200 and the other at £300. 

It's hard not to both love and hate eBay!  On one hand, sellers ignorant of what a coin is worth and giving it a stupid heading so that it by-passes the post-Kew Gardens Facebook Coin Hunt generation, and on the other sellers deliberately trying to fleece buyers because they think a coin is more rare than it actually is.

2016-dated 2p and 20p coins have been issued.  One of each sold on eBay (to me!) with photos clearly showing the obverses.  I have made enquiries with another contact to find out which others (if any) dated 2016 are out.

Apparently all denominations from 1p to 50p dated 2016 have been produced.

Mark Fitzgerald did a Freedom of Information Request to the States Treasury to determine how many coins have been issued from 2000 onwards.  However, I think these are coins received/issued in those years and not necessarily the dates on them.   For instance, I would say the coins issued in 2000 and 2001 are actually dated 1998.

The 2012 20p shows as "Nil" but I have this coin so it definitely exists. I'm surmising that it was received at the end of 2011 and included in figures for that year.  I received mine at the end of 2012.

I went to the Royal Mint Experience today (yep, I struck my own new £1 coin) and on display were examples from each country that the Royal Mint produces coins for.  For Jersey, there was a 2012-dated £2 coin, proving that it does exist.  I've yet to see one on eBay and I've got two sources working on it, neither of whom are having much luck with States of Jersey Treasury.
