Not that ancient I'm afraid: Mutawakkilite kingdom of Yemen, Yahya bin Mohammed Hamid el-Din (Imam Yahya) 1904-1948, 1/4 Imadi riyal, Sana'a mint, date off at bottom of reverse (the 1322 at top of the obverse is his accession date).

My example below is 1932 (1351 H).

Figleaf

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

1322 is Yahya's accession date and appears on all his coins. The actual date of issue is unreadable on this coin unfortunately.

Peter , Zeno 133126 is a different coin than this one and Alan, Yes you are correct,  1322 is Yahya's accession date and appears on all his coins. The actual date of issue is unreadable on this coin unfortunately

thanks

Zeno 133126 is just a slight variety, having 13 crescents on the obverse rather than the 14 on the one I posted, but as all the dies were hand cut there will be numerous such minor varieties: I think essentially they are all three the same 1/4 riyals.

Another one of mine with 13 crescents (and a rather deteriorating reverse die) below.

Coin collecting has a curious name. It is also called the "Hobby of Kings".
