Dear Friends

GOI may shortly release a new commemorative coin set. It will probably be issued by Kolkata mint and denominations could be Rs 5 & Rs 100. I know the subject but will disclose it after verification. Its NOT Commonwealth Games, Rabindranath Tagore or Mother Teresa...

Ok lets play a guessing game. You can find the subject by filling the blanks:

The Vice President of India Shri M. Hamid Ansari on 28th Feb, 2010 in Patna has released a commemorative coin of Rs. 100 and Rs 5 on the occasion of 125th year of the birth of Dr. Rajendra Prasad, First President of India

Yes, coins were issued on 125 yrs of Dr Rajendra Prasad. I did not uoaded the news earlier since it was unconfirmed.Funny part is that he already completed 125 years in 2009.2010 would be his 126 year!! One more thing, Krishna Deva Raya coin has not been approved. Sanjay Kansal

Thanks for the updates, both! A commemorative on Dr.Rajendra Prasad is quite surprising, does it show his portrait only? In that case,it will another boring coin! :-\

Very soon, you will be getting the "VIP SETS" (of course at a very high premium), of these Proof Sets. I don't know how these dealers get these VIP sets from all the Ministers and other guests present in the function. Or is it that they get these sets directly from the Mint through their SOURCES?

One more question. We know that the Coins for Dr. Rajendra Prasad have been released on 28th Feb. This also means that the Dies for the coins are already made. Then why do the mints take so much time for booking of these sets? Normally, the booking for these coins will start after 7-8 months. Even after the closure of bookings, why do they take so much time to mint and dispatch the sets? Any idea as to how many sets are being booked now a days? Previously, the bookings used to be around 2000-3000 sets. But since now the number of collectors has increased, what is the number of Bookings?

That seems to be the only possible explaination. I do not think that the sets would be distributed to all invitees. They would be handed out to the select few who are on the dias. Their PA would arrange for the 'disposal' of the sets as the VIP's would generally not know what to do with them. The 'left over' material, which could be quite many would the 'walk' out of the mint / concerned authority who organised the function and finf their way to the pockets of a few select and discreet dealers. The market will then pay a hefty premium for these VIP sets.

Ask the mint and they will reply that the information can not be provided in the interest of national security. >:D

A VIP set is same as proof set (Quality wise,I mean).Am I correct? The only difference between them is their packaging,I suppose?

Yes, you are right, Aditya. A VIP set consists of the same Proof Coins, but in a Velvet Box, with a small mint medal/token.
