The National Bank of Denmark has a few months ago initiated a process to identify a new manufacturer of its coins. This following the closure of the current manufacturer, Mint of Finland. So far I was unable to find any information on which mint has been selected, if a decision has already been taken.

According to the official tender details, the submission deadline was on 8 November 2024, probably too early to have the winner at this stage (NB: it took 9 months in the Netherlands in the recent circulation coins procurement):

The tender was won by the Spanish mint. A remarkable winner. There were 2 other bidders. The contract is for 4 years.

New supplier of Danish coins

Danmarks Nationalbank has signed an agreement with Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre – Real Casa de La Moneda of Spain regarding production of Danish coins for the next four years. The Spanish coin manufacturer will be responsible for producing coins depicting HM King Frederik X.

Danmarks Nationalbank has had an agreement with Mint of Finland for the production of Danish coins since 2017. The contract expired in 2024 and Danmarks Nationalbank initiated an EU tender to identify a new supplier of coins.

Real Casa de La Moneda was chosen because their bid was the most favourable overall. The evaluation criteria included price, quality, and corporate social responsibility (CSR).

The first order from Real Casa de La Moneda will be for 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 kroner coins, which will be updated with motifs depicting HM King Frederik X. The first coins from the Spanish manufacturer are expected to enter circulation in late 2025. Real Casa de La Moneda produces coins for several other countries, including Spanish euro coins.

"Danmarks Nationalbank has highly valued the good relationship with Mint of Finland. We now look forward to starting a new chapter with Real Casa de la Moneda and continuing the tradition of coin issuance with emphasis on high quality and reliability," says Niels Kaas, Chief Cashier at Danmarks Nationalbank.

The National Bank of Denmark refused to provide me the names of the 2 unsuccessful bidders.

I do not think they are obliged to do it by law.

Yes, that indeed appears to be the case.

When I meet the Dutch mintmaster again later this year I will ask him. He probably knows who the 2 unsuccessful bidders were.

The transaction is subject to the WTO Government Procurement Code. However, Trump has effectively closed down the dispute settlement mechanism by not nominating a US judge. Nevertheless, the EU has started a voluntary dispute settlement mechanism and Denmark is undoubtedly bound to it. However, many developing and dictatorial/strongman countries have not joined the voluntary mechanism.

AFAIK, there is no provision for transparency in the Government Procurement Agreement. However, if an unsuccessful bidder can convince its own government that Denmark did not respect the rules of the Agreement, the identity of the unsuccessful bidder is likely to become known in any dispute settlement case.
