On November 15, 2013, the first report surfaced about the discovery of this type of counterfeit coin in circulation, tied to an incident on November 6 at a shop in Amposta, located on Spain's eastern coast. This counterfeit is classified as a fantasy fake, as no genuine 2 euro commemorative coin resembling it exists. The counterfeit coin claims to commemorate the "Castles of Europe" and features an image of Almansa Castle in Spain. No other fantasy fakes from this alleged series are known to exist. The pieces have mainly been found in circulation in Spain. Some of the pieces weigh 8 grams, which is 0.5 grams less than a genuine coin, while others appear to have the correct weight. Furthermore they easily get rust on them. The edge is partially reeded and partially flat, without edge lettering.

Interesting series. I realise that there is no clear separation between fakes and fantasies, but personally, I'd be inclined to call the pieces with the castle a fantasy. The reverse is deceptive, so it's closer to a fake, but the obverse is not an imitation, so it becomes an argument for calling the whole a fantasy.

Nevertheless, one could argue that there are way too many 2 euro obverses for users to remember, so that the obverse is a bet on the piece being accepted as money even if it has a fantasy design. That option, a poignant comment on the greed of official issuers, makes it a fun collectible piece

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.
