Since around April 2024, the pieces below are being reported as found in circulation in southern Spain. It is thought that these possibly used to be tokens for shopping carts or carwash, and that they were later amended to be passed off as currency. On the reverse of the pieces the word 'Copy' has been scratched off. I was unable to find a token like this.

I'd think the second and third picture only have a passing resemblance to the real thing. Inspired by, rather than a fraudulent copy (fake) of a circulation coin.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

I have made the decision that these pieces belong in this topic. It is clear that one or more criminals in southern Spain have gotten their hands on a bunch of pieces that resemble genuine euro coins. They have subsequently scratched off the word 'Copy' or 'Copia', with the intention to bring them into circulation.

What is interesting is that there seems to be a link between these imitation pieces, and actual fake 2 euro coins of Estonia that were being sold on Chinese ecommerce sites. These fakes have the word 'Copy' on them. However they were found in circulation in the same area in Spain with this word scratched off.

As a new find that I came across proves, the word that was scratched off indeed appears to be 'Copy'. See here.
