Gibraltar is planning to issue a commemorative 50 pence coin for its 320th anniversary. The coin will depict Admiral Rook and his Anglo-Dutch fleet who successfully captured Gibraltar during the war of the Spanish succession.

Not really. It depends on the legend. Gibraltar was captured in 1704. Thus, 320 years later is 2024. However, that event did not convey any change of sovereignty. That was accomplished only by the peace of Utrecht in 1714.

Gibraltar has issued faulty commemoratives on its sovereignty before, as if it started in 1704. It is an anachronistic and inappropriate attitude towards international law, whose only possible use is to irritate the Spanish government that happens to be a UK ally.

Plus it's an odd anniversary.  320th or even 310th (to use Figleaf's dating) - what's the significance?  300th or 350th perhaps, but anything else looks silly.

On the coins from 2004 there is no specific inscription except of the dates 1704-2004 (in case of crown: "Tercentary" in addition), so these coins are well known as "Tercentary of British occupation" or "300 Ann. of Capture of Gibraltar".

Treaty of Utrecht which was in 1713, was also commemeorated in 2013 by coins (1 crown, 3 Pounds).

Will see how will be the 2024 legend. And yes, Anniversary is strange, not round.

A design has appeared online of what seems to be the coin, although the reverse design does not completely match with the description of the design that was published earlier.

Quote"It is intended to repeat the commemorative coin every year in future. The presentation packs will be increased to 1,321 next year when we celebrate our 321st anniversary and so on in subsequent years.

"The coins will be released by the Hon. Minister Sir Joe Bossano and will be strictly limited to the 1,320 presentation packs and circulating 50 pence coins.

That is an awful idea to issue a commemorative coin for this occasion every year. Luckily quite a few of the things that were mentioned by Sir Joe Bossano in the past didn't materialize. So there is hope that it won't happen.

I wonder why the document, of which the screenshots have been published, mentions "Reverse designs", while only 1 reverse design is shown.

The coin is now available for sale from the website of the Gibraltar National Mint here. There is an edition limit of 1,320 pieces. I do not know whether this number also reflects the actual mintage figure, or if the coin will also be released in other packaging.

The text diplomatically skirts the issue I raised, though I have grave doubts about the use of the word "sovereignty". Next time, use the word "power", Gibraltar!
