This topic gives an overview of the pieces made by a specific counterfeiting ring known for its fake 2 euro coins with rotating stars on both sides. Furthermore the pieces have a red coloured outer ring. Unlike any other counterfeiters that I know of, it clearly appears that this counterfeiting ring mints the cores and rings separately and then later forcefully pushes the cores in the rings. Furthermore they use only one design for the rings, because of which design details that are on the ring on the obverse of genuine coins, are omitted on these fakes. Remarkably, all stars on both sides of these fakes are rotating instead of straight.

Pieces that were made by this counterfeiting ring are only rarely being found. It is unclear when they started. The first known find is of January 2020, although it is possible that they started many years earlier. It is also unknown where they are located. 2 finds were reported in Belgium, 2 in France and 4 in Italy. The choice for the coins they decided to fake is also odd.

Note: The reverse design of the 10, 20, and 50 euro cent coins used by Vatican City from 2006 to 2013 was featured on the core. No 2 euro coin with this exact reverse exists. Furthermore the piece has rotating stars on its reverse.

This is good stuff, eurocoin. Going beyond what is known, making connections, creative, original, moving boundaries of knowledge. Congratulations and thank you.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.
