Hello

Here is a 5 cents 1901 with what I thought first being a post strike damage but it looks more to a die crack or rather a defective planchet.
Tell me your opinion please.
Thank you.

The raised line from the rim as far down as the top of the E in CENT appears to be a die crack. The damaged area below the E and into the 9 of 1901 looks more like a planchet flaw or delamination. If it were a delamination though the 9 would likely be either weakly struck or missing altogether. My best guess is that it's all due to a damaged die. Interested to see what others say.

FWIW, I vote for a die crack. I agree completely with Bruce's erudite analysis, but I think the crack continues sideways ending between the 9 and the 1 of the date or maybe even at the ribbon of the wreath. It is quite possible that the die broke very shortly after your coin was struck.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

I thought about it more and I agree that the entire area of damage is a die crack...no delamination. The die crack is subtle but still evident. Very interesting coin.
