Today was the Day of the Mint, the annual open day of Royal Dutch Mint. There were quite a lot of visitors, although it remains nothing compared to how it used to be 10-15 years ago. It was possible to strike a medal, meet the mintmaster, look at the manufacturing process, play a quiz and buy the Day of the Mint set. The theme of the set was the 10 years since the downing of flight MH17. Although the mint made it in cooperation with the organisation for the family members of the victims of MH17, I continue to find it not really acceptable to make money with this theme.

Not much production was taking place. Only 5 cent coins of Belgium 2024 were being manufactured. They had just completed an order of circulation coins for Kyrgyzstan, for which they will also be minting next year.

The Netherlands will mint 5 cent, 10 cent, 20 cent and 2 euro for general circulation this year. Belgium 5 cent, 50 cent and the 2 commemorative 2 euro coins. Royal Dutch Mint will also be minting Latvian 2 euro commemorative coins for general circulation and in BU quality this year, aswell as standard coins in BU quality.

Still a very large amount of coins of Sierra Leone 2022 were in stock. The Central Bank of Sierra Leone had asked that RDM will only send them to Sierra Leone when they need them.

Some photos of the mint building, front, inside and rooftop terrace. Click on the image to enlarge. For the first time this year, 2 extra rooms were open to the public, amongt which the mintmaster's office.

I guess I have been away too long. I assumed you were talking about the ole Utrecht mint. Is anything still happening in that building? Since the money museum has been bullied out of the building, I suppose it's pretty quiet there now.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Since 2020, Royal Dutch Mint is no longer located in the building on the Leidseweg in Utrecht. After the mint left, almost the entire building was being used by the company The Attention Group, trading under the name Muntgebouw Utrecht, where they held events and congresses and also rented the rooms for other purposes such as the filming of TV and music productions. They had already been doing that since around 2014 in a part of the building, that was not in use anymore due to the closure of the mint museum. In 2021, also a vegan restaurant opened in the mint building called 'De Zware Jongens'.

The old mint building is currently being renovated. Due to the renovations both companies had to leave the building. After the summer, when the renovations are completed, Muntgebouw Utrecht will use it again to organize events and congresses. I don't know whether the restaurant will return.
