Quote from: Figleaf on March 11, 2024, 03:51:12 PMTraditionally, the storming of the Bastille on 14th July 1789 is considered the start of the French revolution. However, that event was the culmination of a period of political instability. Another candidate for the starting point of the revolution occurred on 20th June 1789.
A sector of the municipal ossuary located in the Catacombs of Paris is called "Martyrs of the Revolution". It includes 3 steles paying tribute to the victims of 3 events of the Revolution. The first concerns August 28 and 29... 1788: a Parisian riot. In the provinces, the "tile day" of Vizille on June 7, 1788 is also linked to the Revolution "of 1789".

They still have at least one alcohol overconsumption fuelled riot every Saturday night in Paris. :P I assume this particular one was slightly more violent?

Ahhh. Never heard of that one. An uplifting story. Very interesting and wonderfully low on violence, but showing exemplary solidarity of the rich and the (landed) gentry with the local tiers état. Maybe the proximity of the Swiss border gave the "rebels" courage - Voltaire gave the example. The amazing banquet the millionaire served to the Assembly must have given them comfort. How civilised!

A witness says that there were a few deaths but he is the only one to say so, so very doubtful information. But surely injured people https://journals.openedition.org/cdg/6993?lang=en#tocto2n8

I do not know if you were living in France in 88-89, but if yes, you should have seen these big stamps! Each one around 5 cm long.
