Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has announced that she will abdicate on 14 January. She will be succeeded by the current crown prince Frederik. This means that the Danish coins will be amended. Currently the 1, 2 and 5 kroner coins depict the emblem of Queen Margrethe II. The 10 and 20 kroner coins depict her portrait.

She made sure to slim down the Danish royal family, shortly before abdicating. That upset some of the affected Danish royals. Rather spiteful of her.

Denmark has a population of only around 5 million. Will it produce a thematic series? Highly unlikely.

Just in case, here are my suggestions for themes:

1] Legoland.

2] A can of Carlsberg lager.

3] A packet of Lurpak butter.

4] The Little Mermaid.

Sorry. It's the best that I could do with the available material.  :'(

Just a few weeks after the shop of the Royal (Danish) Mint was closed. Damn.
I am very curious if/how it will be possible to get the new coins.

The Little Mermaid already has a coin. A 10-kr issued in 2005.  :)

Gosh. How boring. Where's the yawn emoji when you need it?

Denmark, 2023.

So farewell, Queen Margrethe. Here is your final coin series.

Rather old-fashioned and rather predictable. And lacking in variety, too.

Must try harder in future, Denmark!

As of 31 December 2023, Queen Margrethe II is the second longest reigning monarch who is still alive.

She has reigned for 51 years and 351 days. She is 83 years old.

Meanwhile, over in Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah has reigned for 56 years and 87 days. He is 77 years old.

Margrethe's abdication was clearly planned. Probably she made the decision about a year ago.

I wonder therefore if the new coins are ready to roll and will be issued early in 2024?

New coins featuring King Frederik X

Danmarks Nationalbank will begin work on new coins featuring His Majesty King Frederik X following the king's succession of the Danish throne.

Danmarks Nationalbank will continue to mint 10- and 20-kroner coins with the regent's portrait as the motif on the obverse while the regent's monogram will also continue to feature on 1-, 2- and 5-kroner coins. The bank is in the process of updating coin designs and plan to work closely with the Royal Court on the matter.

Traditionally, Denmark issues a passing of the crown coin, which last happened when Queen Margrethe II became the Danish monarch following the death of her father, King Frederik IX. Danmarks Nationalbank has also commenced preparations for the special coins to commemorate the passing of the crown.

Minting coins is a time-consuming process, and once the final design is agreed, minting will require the use of special production processes. Thus, the new coins are expected to enter circulation by the end of the year at the earliest.

The new coins will not replace coins currently in circulation but will be released into the stock currently circulating.

Danmarks Nationalbank will publish information about new coins continuously on its website.

The new circulation coins are expected to be issued in the second half of 2025. I wonder which mint will manufacture them. The Danish coins used to be manufactured by Mint of Finland, but that company will close in the spring of next year.

The tender for the manufacturing of the coins will be closed on 08-Nov-2024.
The contract will span the years 2025-2028. The estimated value is 17 million Euro (excluding VAT). The maximum value is 20 million Euro.
The award criteria are price (40%), quality (30%) and -- drum roll, please -- ''corporate social responsibility'' (30%).
I will refrain from any comment about the third criteria. Having said that it obviously gives Danmarks Nationalbank some great leeway to give/shove the contract to a mint they have set their eye on -- whoever that may be.

I think the Dutch mint is the only mint that manufactures circulation coins, and that is owned by a charity so.. :)

Following the longstanding Danish tradition the circulation 20 kroner coin celebrating the Passing of the Crown featuring King Frederik X and Queen Margrethe II has just been issued in early November 2024.
