Most years we get a new design series or two from countries whose coins look tired or old-fashioned.

Upthread I mentioned some Latin American and Arab countries whose coinages I would like to see updated.

Here I will show three sets from sub-Saharan African countries that look rather outdated.

Comoros 2013  set.jpg

Comoros.

Most of these designs date from the 1970s and 1980s.

Some of them have F.A.O. slogans.

These are long since out of fashion on coins.

NOTE: F.A.O. = Food and Agricultural Organization (a United Nations body).

Djibouti.

Another set that is crying out for modernisation.

Mauritius.

A mixture of old and even older designs.

They do not cohere well.

Time for a change.

Will any of these countries Issue a new design series?

Let's see if I get lucky.  :)

Thailand 2018.jpg

Thailand 2018.

Thailand's coins have a common obverse and a common reverse.

This is rather unusual and very boring these days.

This series was issued in 2018 for the new king.

It's time surely that a more interesting set was issued.

The previous one had a beautiful architectural theme.

Niger Defaults on $22 Million Debt Payment, Exits ECOWAS Amid Financial Turmoil

Niger's ECOWAS departure, along with Mali and Burkina Faso, highlights the region's financial and political challenges.

I note that Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso are all members of the West African States currency union.

Will any of them leave the currency union and issue their own national currency?

Costa Rica is the latest domino to fall. A thematic set is due in 2025.

Costa Rica: New series of circulating coins 2025

Costa Rica.

There are also a few such boring sets in Latin America.

Check out Bolivia, Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

But don't expect them to change any time soon.

Nicaragua.

Now that Costa Rica is going thematic, will Bolivia and Nicaragua follow suit?

National coin series are often influenced by developments in their vicinity.

Cuba set'.jpg

Cuba.

And what about Cuba?

Its basic designs remain unchanged since 1915.

But most people do not usually think about Cuba.

It is the North Korea of the Caribbean.

Do most Cubans even use coins?

quaziright

For a North Korea of the Caribbean, it's one of the hotter all inclusive vacation destinations for Canadians and Americans

2025 will soon be upon us, so let's review my predictions for 2024.

Here is one that I got right, but only just.

Quote from: <k> on December 21, 2023, 09:34:05 AMHere is my top prediction: the issue of the Caribbean guilder will be delayed yet again, despite having been promised since 2011.

The Caribbean guilder was indeed delayed again, but only by a year this time, and the coins are now minted and ready for issue in 2025.

In a topic that I wrote in February 2024, which is linked to below, I expressed my wish for a thematic Costa Rican coinage, and I predicted that their recent use of thematic commemoratives for their top denomination would in fact pave the way for this:

Costa Rica: coinage structure analysis and the future.

In July 2024, I learned that my wish and prediction will come true far earlier than I had dared imagine:

Costa Rica: New series of circulating coins 2025

None of my other wishes or predictions came close to coming true.
