A ₹100 commemorative coin will be issued on 2550th Niravana Mahotsav of Lord Mahavir. Shri Manoj Tiwari, a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha, officially announced the issuance of the commemorative coin during the Shamavani program held on the 2nd of October 2023. Gazette notification awaited.

Coins of similar denomination have been issued by Srilanka on occasion of lord Buddha's passing away in 2006

From past few years, we have seen odd denominations like ₹175 ₹350 ₹400 ₹550. However, the coinage act doesn't allow them to make more than ₹1000 coin.

yup, rather than the denomination, the occasion was what i wanted to point out
so curious that both lord mahavira and lord buddha were almost contemporary

quaziright

Is it not commemorating the same person as this one here : https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces6085.html

Also, what does that one commemorate in 2001 and this one in 2023? Basic math tells me something is off over here given that they are issued 22yrs apart yet one coin marks the 2600th anniversary of something while this yet to be issued will mark the 2550th anniversary of another thing. Does not add up

The 2001 was the birth anniversary 2600 year. The 2023 is 2550 Niravana (death) anniversary. Lord Mahavir was 72 years when he left the world.

I see, thank you. So he was born around 599BC (2600yrs ago, coin issued in 2001) and died around 527BC (2550 yrs ago for coin issued in 2023). Quite a ripe old age to live to in those times!

why Rs. 1000 for khartargach and just Rs. 100 for mahavira??

₹1000 is for the completion of its 1000 years of foundation by Jaincharya Shri Jineshwar Suri. ₹100 coin because they can't issue ₹2550 coin  ;D

There are two varieties with this coin. Hyderabad Mint has misspelled Mahaveer as Mahavira.

krishna

its a matter of immense pride that the Hyderabad mint is using computers in the design of the legends of coins, Helping them space the legends to appropriately cover the flan of the coins

Such die variety is just to up the collector's interest,
please never think low of Indian mints, they are unmatched and unrivalled in making error coin sets...

quaziright

I would think a proper name, and especially one that is not of Anglo-Saxon/european origin would be transliterated into English. By that, I mean there is no right way of spelling it. From scrutinizing the Hindi legend to the left, it does not appear there is any change. So the above is certainly a die variety, but who is to say which is the error and which isn't ;)

krishna

i concur, it may be considered as a die variety

even the variations of mahaveer and mahavir exist in the description of the Indian Prime Minister's website (see below image)

Thus Hyderabad mint can be condoned this time
