Hi.
Gubbio KM#136 1 quattrino with Saint Peter has the lettering BENED XIV P M and AP S PETRVS
I have that one also.
The new one that I have acquired is strange. The inscription is different.
BBE XIV and AP.S. PET.
I do not think that there is sense to forge such common small coins.
What do you think?
Is there a way to find the documentation of variants of coinage of the Papal States?
I have other Gubbio or Ferrara coins with different variants.

I am not aware of a catalogue of varieties of these coins.

Great variation in legends is normal at this time. The letters were cut into the die separately by less experienced engravers. They tended to start out full of enthusiasm, only to get the available space wrong, so they had to improvise by leaving letters out.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

I have found references mentioning that the variants are documented in the catalog of F. Muntoni, Le monete dei Papi e degli Stati Pontifici, 1972. I could not find it yet in electronic format.
There is also the "MIR", Monete Italiane Regionali - Stato Pontificio (752 -1878), Volume IIII, La monetazione da Benedetto XIII (1724) a Pio IX (1878), of Alessandro Toffanin.
Maybe there is an electronic version that can be obtained...
