Pobjoy Mint will close its doors at the end of this year. They released the following statement:

"It is with great sadness that Managing Director Taya Pobjoy has announced her official retirement and the closure of Pobjoy Mint after 58 years of manufacturing official currency and commemorative coins. The Mint closure will take place at the end of 2023 so customers will have a chance to complete their collections for the full year with some releases being brought forward to allow plenty of time for collectors to buy them."

"I've made the big decision to retire this year. My prime objective is to give the customers our service until the end and to make sure that they get a complete year because we all know that coin collecting is an annual thing with a date change. So it's been very much on my mind when making this decision to make sure I give a good service to the very end to my customers..." - Taya Pobjoy

An interview with Taya Pobjoy about the closure of the mint can be found here.

Very sad info... Pobjoy produced a great coins, specially for Gibraltar and Isle of Man (however they are no longer coin manufacturer to any of these two teritories).
The Pobjoy Team is very supportive and always answer very quickly providing the information & coin photos that I needed (mostly for the BVI coins that I'm Numista referee). Usually not a case for other mints where you need to wait weeks for answer or no answer at all.

This is indeed incredibly sad and unexpected news. I had great contact with the mint over the years. In contrary to the other British private mints, they always replied to queries and were often willing to provide information. :(

I had hoped to have made a copy of the mint's website before it goes offline by the end of this month, but unfortunately crawling of the website seems to be impossible. Only the special websites for the stamps and jewellery divisions can be saved, but these are not too interesting.

I have been told that Pobjoy Diamonds & Fine Jewellery, the jewellery division that is being run by Taya's husband, will remain in business.

Pobjoy Mint issued a special coin for the retirement of its mintmaster Taya Pobjoy. It is a special version of the 10 dollar silver bullion coin of the British Virgin Islands depicting pegasus, that Pobjoy Mint manufactured every year. The piece depicts a special privy mark containing the head of a horse, a horseshoe and the initial T. The mark refers to Taya Pobjoy's love for horses, she is a passionate horse rider. It quickly sold out. Furthermore an edition in gold with a face value of 250 dollars was issued. The gold version has a mintage of 1 and costs 4,000 pounds. The coin was not yet sold.

Today is the last day on which it is possible to order from Pobjoy Mint. Their website will also be taken down after today.

Pobjoy Mint has relaunched its website, providing information about the company's past. It can be seen here.

I ordered the Falkland Islands proof-like set at the beginning of the week they closed.  Had I not read it on here, I wouldn't have known they were closing as I didn't see anything on their website about it before it went.  It arrived the following week, an unusual but attractive presentation.

Thanks for posting the info on here, eurocoin.

At the time of its closure, Pobjoy Mint was the exclusive manufacturer of coins for collectors for the following issuers. It remains unclear whether these issuers will continue to release coins for collectors, and if so, which mint will manufacture them.

British Antarctic Territory
British Indian Ocean Territory
British Virgin Islands
Falkland Islands
Sierra Leone
South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands

I have an impression that they stopped with BIOT at some point. It has become a bit of a risky business after the ICJ judgement. According to Numista, there were no releases in 2022 nor 2023.

MCz

Yes, no coins from BIOT in last two years. For the other hand, number of coins issued on behalf of BAT was significantly higher then before.

The government of the British Antarctic Territory informed me that they will continue to issue coins but are still in the process of choosing a new manufacturer.

The government of the British Indian Ocean Territory informed me that they have no plans for any further coins.

The government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands will also continue to issue coins. It is still unknown which company will mint their coins.
