Today I met a multi-talented person. ;) Let me explain ... the website of the Ukrainian central bank has a list of the coins and medals it has issued. And I thought it would be easy to tell these two kinds apart: If there is a face value, it will be a coin. Problem is, I do not understand Ukrainian, so it took a little while until I realized that a face value of 2 for example can also be expressed by writing ДВІ ...

End of prolog, enter Vasyl Krychevskyi. I met or came across the man by seeing a 2 hryvnia collector coin dedicated to him; he was born 150 years ago. He was a designer, painter, architect and and and, so the coin combines several elements that refer to him: The trident (tryzub) next to his portrait is an old symbol (see here for example) and was used for the 1918 Ukrainian coat of arms designed by guess who. :)

On the other side we have a tree of life, taken from a 1918 banknote designed by you-know-who ... More info is in the folder (PDF, English) about the Vasyl Krychevskyi coin. For somebody who can read the script and language, it is obvious of course that the text "inside" the tree is the face value: ДВІ ГРИВНІ, that is, 2 hryvnias.

While I was at it, I also noticed another piece that has the denomination in characters only. That one was issued on 1 June; Ukraine (like many other countries) celebrates Children's Day on that day. On the side with the coat of arms at the top, you see a house with a cradle. The other side features a child in space that is connected by a umbilical cord to a map of Ukraine. Again, there is a folder (PDF, English) which explains all that. In this case, the face value is next to the CoA: П'ЯТЬ ГРИВЕНЬ, i.e. five hryvnias.

By the way, the folder has a link to a short video with a color version, so to say. The coin was designed by Oleh Shupliak, and I guess the other elements in that video were done by him too. Aaah, the "movie" has English subtitles. :)

My knowledge of Ukrainian is limited to words I know in Russian plus the word for train station Gusev taught me ;) I was confused by the legend НАРОДЖЕНИЙ В УКРАЇНІ. In the Soviet era, НАРОДНА (people's) was usually the beginning of the name of some communist organisation. Thanks to uncle Google, I learned that the legend stands for "born in Ukraina". There should be song with that title. Is Bruce Springsteen still around? :)

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Of course he is. About a month ago I was on a walk here in Düsseldorf, and suddenly noticed a crowd standing in front of a hotel. Turned out they were waiting for "The Boss" who had a concert in D'dorf that day. ;D  As for that legend, I usually use DeepL for translations (fewer languages but better results), but in this case ... if the info in the folder says it means "Born in Ukraine", I have no reason to doubt that. ;)
