Edward III Florin

The florin was probably issued immediately after the écu à la chaise. Diameter of 20mm. There were three issues, 1352, 53 and 54 identifiable by the style of St John. The second issue saw a 10% weight reduction. The third issue saw a further 7% weight reduction.

The obverse design is a depiction of St John the Baptist facing with halo, holding a flower in his right hand and a sceptre in his left, dividing a circumscription translating to 'St John the Baptist'. The reverse design is a large ornamented lis dividing a circumscription translating to 'Duke of Aquitaine'.

Edward III Léopard

The léopard had a diameter of 28-30mm. There were four issues, 1355, 56, 57 and 1360-61 after the Treaty of Brétigny. The second issue saw a 7% weight reduction. The third issue saw a further 14% weight reduction and this weight was retained for the fourth issue.

First issue: The obverse design is a crowned lion facing walking left, bristly tail, within a tressure of arcs, trefoils on cusps and in spandrels. All within an inner circle with a circumscription translating to 'Edward, by the Grace of God, King of England and France'. The reverse design is a floreated cross with six pellets in central quadrilobe, lion in each angle, all within an ornate quadrilobe with voided quatrefoils in spandrels, no inner circle. The circumscription translates to 'Christ conquers, Christ reigns, Christ commands'.

The reverse design is a floreated cross with six pellets in central quadrilobe ornamented with quatrefoils, lion in each angle, all within an ornate quadrilobe with voided quatrefoils in spandrels, within inner circle. The circumscription translates to 'Christ conquers, Christ reigns, Christ commands'.

The fourth issue has three different obverse circumscriptions. One with English titles only, one with English and Aquitanian titles and a third with English, Aquitanian and Irish titles.

Edward III Guyennois

There were three issues, 1361, early 62 and late 62. Diameter 30mm. The first two were only struck at Bordeaux. The third issue was struck at Figeac, Limoges, Poitiers and La Rochelle. There was also a third issue struck without mint identification (probably Bordeaux). The first and second issues are identifiable by the pose of the king, both having a quadrilobe design on the reverse. The third issue has a tressure on the reverse.

First issue: The obverse design is a full length figure of the king in armour, standing to right under a Gothic portico, sword in right hand, shield in left hand, lion at either side of his feet. The circumscription translates to 'Edward, by the Grace of God, King of England, Lord of Aquitaine'. The reverse design is a floreated cross with the letter 'B' in central quadrilobe, lis and lion in alternate angles, within an ornate quadrilobe with voided quatrefoils in spandrels, all within an inner circle. The circumscription translates to 'Glory be to God in the highest, and in earth peace towards men'.

Second issue: The obverse design is a full length figure of the king in armour, advancing right, sword in right hand, shield in left hand, within a Gothic portico with voided quatrefoils in side columns, two lions facing outwards below his feet, the design reaching the bottom edge of the coin. The circumscription, divided by the figure, translates to 'Edward, by the Grace of God, King of England, Lord of Aquitaine'. The reverse design is a floreated cross with the letter 'B' in central quadrilobe, lis and lion in alternate angles, within an ornate quadrilobe with voided quatrefoils in spandrels, all within an inner circle. The circumscription translates to 'Glory be to God in the highest, and in earth peace towards men'.

The third issues struck at Figeac, Limoges, Poitiers and La Rochelle bear the initial letter of the mint (F, L, P and R respectively). The Figeac letter can be found at the end of the obverse inscription, Limoges and Poitier letters are placed on the right between the pinnacles of the portico and the La Rochelle letter can be found the right between the pinnacles of the arch or between the king's legs. Also struck without mint letter.

Gros aux Trois Fleurs-de-Lis

The silver gros aux trois fleurs-de-lis had a diameter of 23mm. The obverse design has two circumscriptions within beaded circles around a short cross pattée with lis pointing inwards in second and third quarters. The outer circumscription translates to 'Blessed be the name of our lord God' (benedictum sit nomen domini nostri dei). The inner circumscription translates to 'Edward, King of England'. The reverse design is a châtel with annulet turrets and a lis in place of a spire, lion left below and a circumscription translating to 'Duke of Aquitaine', all within an inner circle surrounded by a tressure arches, each containing a lis.

Edward III Sterling & Demi-Sterling

The silver sterling (quarter-gros) had a diameter of 18-19mm, 0.87 fine. The obverse design is a three-quarters bust left, lion left below with a circumscription divided by the lion translating to 'Edward, King of England'. The reverse design is a long cross fourchée with trefoil or quatrefoil in forks for the denier, only trefoil for the obole, crowns in the quarters, dividing a circumscription translating to 'Duke of Aquitaine'.

Edward III Blanc au Léopard (crown above lion)

The silver blanc au léopard had a diameter of 18-25mm. The obverse design has two circumscriptions within beaded circles around a short cross pattée, lis pointing outwards in second quarter. Varieties exist with a pellet, trefoil, cross, mullet, star, inverted crescent, I or M below the lion.
Some are struck on small, light-weight flans. They vary in weight from 0.69-2.47gm. Nearly all are poor quality.

The inner circumscription translates to 'Edward, King of England'. The reverse design is a châtel with annulet turrets, crown within (giving the coin its name), within a circumscription translating to 'Duke of Aquitaine', all within an inner circle surrounded by a tressure of arches, each containing a leaf. There is a variety with a pellet above the crown.
