Belgium will this year issue a 2 euro commemorative coin for Art Nouveau in Brussels. It will only be released in coincard. Lots of secrecy about the design in other numismatic circles. Not here.

The design of the coin and packaging is a total failure of Royal Mint of Belgium, Royal Dutch Mint and Iris Bruijns. This should never have been approved.

I have significant doubts about the qualities of Iris Bruijns as coin designer.

Not a circulating €2 commem, but a surcharged piece only? Then I don't really care about the design. ;D  But I am certainly not fond of it.

Thank you for the info.  According to Wikipedia 'art nouveau' was first applied to the group 'Les Vingt' in about 1883, so perhaps this is the 140th anniversary. Belgium has had two €2 commemoratives every year since 2014, will there be a second one this year?

The "Art Nouveau Anniversary" refers to Victor Horta finishing the Hôtel Tassel, and that was 130 years ago. See here. As for the design, in theory there is an embargo until 20 June, but apparently there are lots of "leaks".

There may very well be a second €2 commem later this year. Nothing known so far. But if that will be yet another coincard issue, meh. ;D

The second 2 euro coin is planned for September according to the official release schedule.

Thank you! We will see whether that will again be a piece for collectors only (which means I will probably ignore it ;) ) or whether Belgium manages to issue circulating commems ...

A better image, thank you, but not a better design. ;)

The coin design is apparently based on details of the Brussels Hôtel/Huis Van Eetvelde. Overview here, detailed image there.
