EMERGENT NATIONS.

Every decade, at least one piece of territory changes hands or breaks away to become independent. In the early 21st century, Timor-Leste regained its independence from Indonesia, and Serbia-Montenegro split into two countries, then Kosovo broke away from Serbia. In 2011, South Sudan became independent.

Nationalism periodically glows hot in some regions. Previously Catalonia was briefly hot. More recently Scotland was hot. That is no longer the case. Currently French Polynesia seems about to grow hot, so far as independence is concerned.
