Unfortunately, there are no coins on view in the Rijksmuseum. The museum has a modest collection (it has many more medals), but they are not shown, even now that the money museum is shuttered. The best numismatic destination in the Netherlands for tourists is Teylers museum. By contrast, Germany has several coin exhibitions.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

BTW - I will be at the Rijks somewhere at the end of February if anyone wants to meet  and have a beer.

Will be in California at that time. ;) But enjoy Amsterdam!

(Side note: I split the topic into two – Trier is over there, and this one has a new title.)

Jealousy

Someone tipped me off this morning that the really big coin collection is in a Museum in Harlem.

That museum in Haarlem is the one that Peter mentioned two years ago, in what is now the first post in this topic. Here are its coins and medals. But depending on how much time you have in Amsterdam, just hop over – it is a short train ride from A'dam to Haarlem and back. :)

All I know is you owe me a beer and a laugh in Amsterdam... maybe at the Waag.

As for the drink (caffeine yes, alcohol no, as far as I am concerned), the problem is that we won't even be on the same continent at that time. ;D  Will be in or somewhere around Los Angeles then. But if you are interested in the Teylers Museum, here is how to get there. The Haarlem train station is at the very top of that map. From there you would have to walk (or take a taxi etc.) to the museum.

Interestingly, right now they feature a medal design on their front page. One that celebrates the Peace of Utrecht by showing a piece of armor that turns into a horn of plenty. Yet another lesson not learned in many countries, but I digress ... Ah well, the Frans Hals Museum (also in Haarlem) you know about anyway. ;)

I booked that Monday to see the Tylers House.  I was hoping to see the Franz Hals as well but it seems they aren't open on Monday which is the day I have for that trip.  I have Sunday already booked to make the long trip to see the Kroller-Muller.  So on this trip I have the VanGogh, Kroller-Muller, Tyler, Rijks and on Shabbat I will be at the Portuguese Synagogue which is an experience in its own right.  My house keeper will be house sitting for me in Brooklyn.  Unfortunately, my California trip is in May for fishing and Continuing Education classes.

The Tylers, aside from the fantastic coin collection, has a spiffy Archeopteryx that makes the whole trip worthwhile.  I've made the Harlem trip before

Most museums are closed on Mondays in large parts of Europe.
I made these photos in Teyler's Museum, it was in 2018 during a Leonardo exhibition.
