A very interesting piece. Apparently, the majority of the coins of this type were overstruck. The side with A(sia) P(ortuguesa) does look like Gomes 02.01. However, on the other side, I see traces of an older host coin at left of the shield. There is little to go on, but it may possibly be a tanga of D. João VI, see Gomes 28.01, showing part of the circle around the shield. I don't think it could be a tanga of D. José or D. Maria I.

This is a puzzle. Gomes does not list (in my edition) a version of 02.01 overstruck over a tanga of D. João VI. Gomes 2.04 looks like it has a different shield. Gomes 2.05 clearly has a very different shield. Does your edition of Gomes list more variants?

Numista 48865 (note puzzling remnants of host coin upside down and to the left of the shield)

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

This coin is from the reign of Miguel I, minted for Portuguese India, there may be traces of coinage of D. José or D. Maria I, but as it is not possible to identify, I classify it as 1 Tanga (60 Réis) of copper with the classification of the book A.G. 02.01 .
