To commemorate the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II, Canada will release a special 2 dollar coin into general circulation. The coin will have a black outer ring. Initially 5 million pieces will be released, although more may be minted later, depending on demand. The outer ring on these coins has a black nickel finish.

Quite an attractive design variation in my opinion. And I also like the fact that this will not just be yet another surcharged collector piece!  :like:

I am wondering, is it black paint on the outer ring as on other coloured circulation Toonies, or gave the RCM the nickel on the outer ring indeed some ''special'' metallurgical treatment (like the Austrian Mint has done with the 25 Euro niobium coin series that started in 2003)?

This is a circulation coin that should also work in vending machines and such. So I guess the surface will be altered but the composition will basically be the same as with other $2 coins.

All coins are equal but some are more equal than others

I was wondering about the same. It is a very good question. Recently I contacted the Royal Canadian Mint about this but have not (yet) heard back. However I just came across an interview that the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association had with the Chief Technology Officer of the mint, Xianyao Li, who mentioned that they have electroplated a special black-coloured nickel alloy on the outer ring. He confirmed that is not paint or pigment. The black colour is already on the blanks, it is not something that is being added after minting. He mentioned that they didn't change the metallic composition dramatically as it is a very thin layer. The special plating does not change the electro magnetic signature of the coin, because of which it can be accepted by vending machines.

Thanks for the update eurocoin.

A few days ago, I received two of these Toonies. When you have the coins ''in your hand'' you can see that there is no black paint or pigment. It's the metal itself that has the colour. But the outer ring is not exactly ''black'' in reality. I would describe it as ''black-ish.'' Even in the picture I took with my smartphone the black colour is more pronounced than it actually is.
