Pobjoy Mint has recently issued a commemorative 50 pence coin for the British Antarctic Territory to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the death of Jacques-Yves Cousteau. He was a French naval officer, explorer, conservationist, film maker, scientist, photographer, author and researcher who studied the sea and all forms of life in water. He co-developed the Aqua-Lung, the first open-circuit SCUBA set, and pioneered marine conservation. With his iconic red beanie and famed ship Calypso, the French marine explorer sailed the world for much of the late 20th century, educating millions about the Earth's oceans and its inhabitants—and inspiring their protection. The design features the ship Calypso with a balloon set to take off for aerial exploration in the icy Antarctic waters.

The piece is available in copper-nickel diamond finish with an edition limit of 1,950 pieces and sterling silver proof with an edition limit of 195.
