The coin commemorates (you will know this, I just looked it up ;) ) the 800th anniversary of his death. Interesting, by the way, that the current Portuguese circulation coins all have seals of Afonso Henriques, from three different years ...

Don Afonso I was the first king of Portugal, so a national trend setter. His arms, a constellation of coins (later five positioned as an X) on a shield (later a block) repeated five times forming a cross became a national emblem. The first coin with this shield was the Morabito of Afonso I. Total specimen known: 1!

morabitano.jpg

This picture shows a gold Morabito of Afonso II from the national collection, Imprensa Nacional Casa da Moneda, 4524. It is practically the same as that of Afonso I. The coin pictured says:

Obv: +REGIS PORTVGALENSIVM
Rev: •MONETA DOMINI ALFONSI (AFNSI on the coin of Afonso I)

The drop-shaped shield was made fashionable by the Normans, in particular those fighting the muslims of Sicily during Afonso I's reign.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.
