Liga do metal: Prata (Ag 835 - Cu 165)
Moeda da 1ª República (1910-1926)
Casa da Moeda: Lisboa

A companion of the 10 centavos 1915 you showed in another thread. Its silver content is the same and its weight exactly 10 times as much. It is a bit strange to see this conformity to the traditions (even if not the practices) of the silver standard coins in times of war and when Portugal was actually on the gold standard. Perhaps the new republic was eager to show its legitimacy, but this series was clearly unsustainable. It shows in the next issue of a 1 escudo coin, in 1924 and made of brass.

It looks like this coin has spent considerable time partially exposed to moisture or moist air (the dark spot between 6 and 9 o'clock.) It doesn't matter. The details are clear and sharp and that's what is important.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.
