I have been reading deemans brilliant piece on English civil war mints, although almost 400 years has past since the war there is still a remaining animosity between the cities of Liverpool and Manchester. During the conflict Liverpool was a royalist stronghold and already a major port, the parliamentarian garrison at Manchester was ordered to attack and take the port of Liverpool to enable supplies to be landed for the battle of Preston. A fierce battle raged for 10 days before the parliamentarian forces were victorious, and the legacy of this feud between the two cities has remained to this day.
