The 2 euro coin of Belgium of 2022 'health care workers' was the last coin design of Luc Luycx for Royal Mint of Belgium. Luycx designed most of the Belgian 2 euro commemorative coins and collectors coins (though never the obverses of the Belgian standard circulation euro coins). He is most well known for winning the design competition for the common reverse of the standard circulating euro coins.

So did he, or is he about to, retire? I have always found it interesting that Luycx had a "lateral entry" so to say: He is a programmer, and first had a programmer's job at the mint. A few years later he moved over to designing coins ...

Yes, he will retire as employee of Royal Mint of Belgium after 37 years. The Muntinfo magazine that was recently published, mentioned that: "it is perhaps also his last ever coin design, unless... never say never". So, I guess he may not be quite done yet with designing coins. ;)

I am glad for him that they apparently gave him the chance to continue as coin designer, even after the mint ceased production. I well remember the sad interviews he gave when he was initially being forced to become a handyman for the government, while he just wanted to continue to do his job: designing coins. Following his retirement, even less is left of what once was the real Royal Mint of Belgium.

Iris Bruijns has replaced Luc Luycx as in-house coin designer of the Belgian Ministry of Finance. Luycx has earlier taught her how to design coins. She worked in financial functions, amongst other things at the Belgian treasury, but wanted to have a more creative job.

Bruijns has already designed a few Belgian coins, and her design was also shortlisted in the design competition for the common 2 euro commemorative coin Erasmus.

Ah yes, the woman with the giant coin. ;D Thanks for the news! About a year ago, Numismag had this story about her ...
