Elizabeth I countermarked Edward VI base shilling

On 27 Sep 1560, a proclamation announced the issuance of new money and officially revalued the old base silver shillings of Edward VI. His second period 6oz and 8oz issues became 4½d and his third period 3oz issues became 2¼d. To assist people to distinguish between the different badness of coin, the 4½d value had a portcullis countermark whilst the 2¼d value had a seated greyhound countermark. These countermarked coins could then be bought-in by the Mint and exchanged for new coin. This continued through to Aug 1561 and the reclamation was so complete that very few of the old silver coins remain. Those with a counterstamp merely survived by chance and are extremely rare.
