Apparently from what I've read it's a celebration of diversity so yes another woke box ticking exercise

Will the change in government affect the issue?
When is the design likely to be made public?

Today I received the following exclusive information in regard of the newly designed standard circulating 1 pound coin from The Royal Mint:

A shortlist of potential artists was prepared in consultation with HM Treasury, having particular regard to artistic merit and ideas of the artists. From there, three artists were invited into the competition process with two artists ultimately presenting their proposals to an independent selection panel comprising of a HMT official, the Chair of the Royal Mint Advisory Committee, Director of the Government Art Collection and the Director of the Royal Mint Museum. Michael Armitage was chosen by the former Chancellor, Rishi Sunak MP, based on the advice of the independent panel. In terms of who will model the coin, the artist will work with Gordon Summers, the Royal Mint's Chief Engraver.

With the accession of King Charles III, we are currently reviewing the timing of upcoming coins.

I have received an update from The Royal Mint on the 1 pound coin that was going to be designed by Michael Armitage. Apparently the project has been cancelled:

In 2022 The Royal Mint commissioned Michael Armitage to produce a new design for the reverse side of the £1. However, due to the passing of Her Late Majesty the Queen and in keeping with tradition, a new set of coinage was required with definitive designs approved by His Majesty the King, and the commission did not progress further.

As the commission did not progress, no approved design is held by The Royal Mint.

I wonder if Mr. Armitage got as far as making any preliminary artwork for this. It would be interesting to see it, if so.

I sent a polite message to Mr Armitage in regard of the project, amongst other things asking if he could maybe share the general concepts or preliminary artwork that was made for the project at the time. Unfortunately, instead of replying he blocked me. Seems to be a very friendly person..
