According to Numista, Gibraltar has had two standard circulation 5 pound coins.

The first one was issued from 1988 to 1993 and depicted Hercules.

It had a diameter of 36 mm.

My question now is, did any members who have visited Gibraltar see either of these 5 pound coins in circulation?

Many commemorative circulation 5 pound coins have also been issued.

I was there in February 2008 and saw neither. I did see apes in circulation. ;)

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

These things are common elsewhere too, eg, 1, 5 an 10 Dirham coins of Qatar have been minted as recently as 2016, but are not in circulation.

Those small coins are minted to meet the statutory requirements. Middle East has many such cases. 1, 5 and 10 Fils of UAE, 1, 5 and 10 Halalas of Saudi Arabia come immediately to mind.

The highest denominations not getting issued is another case.
