Hard to see any EIC influence on this coin. Perhaps they still felt insecure and thought it'd be safer and less controversial to stick with locally known coins? In that case, it's the sort of good local commercialism that goes over well until the religious fanatics arrive.

Or was it the Portuguese, Dutch and French competition, showing the locals that the other intruders were arrogant big-feeted brutes wanting to impose their own culture?

Or maybe the dubs were thought of as too low value to be important - but making them was profitable anyway?
