Reverse of the 50 francs coin.

Also in 1972, the final denomination of the series was issued.

The 50 francs coin was made of nickel.

It weighed 15 grams and had a diameter of 32.9 mm.

It had the same obverse as the other nickel coins.

The reverse carried the same design as the 100 francs coin of 1966.

INDEPENDENCE AS VANUATU

The New Hebrides became independent on 30 July 1980.

Vanuatu was now the name of the new country.

In 1981, the franc was replaced at par by the vatu.

The vatu is the official currency of Vanuatu.

The final coins of the New Hebrides are however dated 1982.

At the same time, the Australian dollar officially ceased to circulate.
