Any help identifying this badge or medal would be appreciated. An image and text search suggested nothing to me.

The symbolism is engraved on the smooth obverse of a US Morgan Silver Dollar. These coins were minted from 1878 through 1921 and every year  some examples were struck at the San Francisco Mint (S) so there's little there to help date the piece. The hinge and flattened hook are obvious so it was meant to be attached to something. These dollar coins are large (38.1mm) and heavy so would be meant to be attached to something that could hold that weight. The coin suggests a US origin but the crown maybe not.

Your comments sre welcomed.

That is the symbol and motto of the Salvation Army.  Someone took a silver dollar and had it made into a Salvation Army brooch.

Very nice.

Many thanks, otlichnik. I'm surprised that didn't come up in my image or text searchs.

Thanks for the link, gerard. I have a vague familiarity with the Salvation Army but still didn't recognize the logo.

Growing up in Amsterdam, I saw Salvation Army operatives on a very regular basis, but I don't remember (ha!) this logo, find the motto somewhat bizarre and the crown something that might restrict its use. Could it be that it was used only in the UK?

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

That's one thing that was confusing to me too. I doubt that an international organization would change their logo so much as to be confusing to others. Like a Nike symbol with a little shoe image perched on top. ;D
