Algeria 1255 AH to ID
« on: November 22, 2021, 06:20:06 AM »
Hi. I believe that this one is a coin of Abdel Kader, from 1255 AH.
it has 16mm, 0.98g
Please help me identify which KM it is ( of 85, 86, 88) because they seem to all have the same weight, and I cannot really make out the inscription since I do not read Arabic. Is it a 5 asper coin, or a 1 kharub, or a 1/6 budju?

Dear carpatic, your coin:
French Colonial, Algérie, Emir Abd-el-Kader El-Djezairi, AH1255 (1839 AD), Billon 5 Asper, Tagdemt mint, KM 85 (AH 1250-1264 /1832-1847 AD)
Reverse (First photo): inside dotted circle reads:
ضرب , dhuriba (Struck)
في    , fi  (in)
تاقدمت  , Tagdemt
١٢٥٥  , 1255
Obverse (Second photo): inside dotted circle, part of verse 19 of Sura the Family of ‘Imran (The Qur’an):
ان الدين , An al-Din
عند الله , eind Allah
الاسلام , Al-Islam
إِنَّ الدِّينَ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ الْإِسْلَامُ (The only religion with Allah is Islam)
Tagdemt (تاقدمت) is a town and commune in Tiaret Province in north-western Algeria.
Abdelkader ibn Muhieddine (عبد القادر ابن محيي الدين‎), known as the Emir Abdelkader or Abdelkader El Hassani El Djazairi, was an Algerian religious and military leader who led a struggle against the French colonial invasion in the mid-19th century.

Coin collecting has a curious name. It is also called the "Hobby of Kings".

Great piece of history, Carpatic.

Abdelkader, as he is known in France, is a well-known and respected person. When he surrendered in 1848, he received the concession that he and in his family would be allowed to go into exile. Instead, he was kept imprisoned in France. A number of personalities, including author Victor Hugo, kept up a political campaign for his liberation. The campaign was successful. In 1852, he was allowed to go to Turkey, where he spent the rest of his life, receiving an annual pension of 100 000 francs, later increased to 150 000 francs as he became increasingly popular for his gentlemanly character and great erudition.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

As we consider this already a modern coin i am moving this from the medieval category to north Africa.
