Obverse designs of the issued half penny and penny.

The coins are not shown to scale. The penny was by far the bigger of the two.

The various prototype designs shown in this topic give us an insight into the painstaking work involved in designing a coinage. Usually the Royal Mint assigned a single artist to a new design series in order to maintain a consistency of style, yet here three different artists produced seven ultimate designs that combined perfectly as a set. The final choice of designs was astute. From the playful elephants and giraffes on the penny and halfpenny, to the half crown with its animal supporters of antelope and leopard, this is a wildlife-themed set of great beauty.

My thanks once again to the staff of the Royal Mint Museum for locating these wonderful old designs and providing me with images of them.
