Afsharids, abbasi (4 shahi) of ‘Adil Shah / Shiraz 1161 AH
« on: October 01, 2021, 10:10:32 AM »
This purports to be an Abbasi, dated AH1141.
It is however quite underweight at 4.6g - it should be 5.3g
.... a jewellers copy maybe?

(I can't work the mint out either....)

I read it as 1161, which I think should be Shah Rukh Afshari or Adil Shah. My three 1161 abbasis weigh 4.48 (Shah Rukh), 4.57 and 4.62 gm (Adil), so I think 4.6 gm is pretty good.

I will have to wait for Maythem to work his magic on the mint though!

Thank you all for the coin ID:
Dear andyg, your coin details:
Afsharids, ‘Adil Shah or ‘Ali Shah Afshar, 1161 AH, AR 4-Shahi, Shiraz mint (AH 1160-1161/1747-1748 AD)
Reverse (First photo): Shiite formula (Kalima):
" لا اله الا الله محمد رسول الله علی ولی الله ”, La illah l’Allah Muhammad Rasul Allah, ‘Ali Wali Allah, meaning, “ No God but God, Muhammad is the messenger of God, ‘Ali is the chosen one of God ”.
Obverse (Second photo):
گشت رایج بحکم لم یزلی / سکه سلطنت به نام علی “,  Gasht raij be-hokm-e lam-yazli/ sekka-ye sultanat be-nam-e 'ali ”, meaning: By order of the Eternal One, coins of the sultanate in the name of 'Ali have become current. The mint is “ Shiraz شیراز  “ at the bottom and the date is “ 1161 ۱۱۶۱  “ also at the bottom 5 O’clock.

Thanks all,
looking at the pictures on Zeno it seems the issues of 1160's were somewhat more crude than those of the 1140's.

In hand the date still looks like 1141, it's only when you enlarge it does it become clear!
I wonder if the die started out as 1160 with another 1 added later.

Dear andyg, the date shown is either 1160 ۱۱۶۰ or 1161 ۱۱۶۱. It cannot be 1141 ۱۱۴۱, unless you mean " 1401 ۱۴۰۱ " which does not fit.
It is definately a digit " 6 ۶ " in Farsi.
It is possible that the die started out as 1160 with another 1 added later.
