In 1990 New Zealand issued a special set of collector coins.

The set  commemorated the 150th anniversary of the Treaty of Waitangi.


The set was issued in both silver and copper-nickel versions.

The reverse designs were the work of Horst Hahne.

The 5 cents was the lowest denomination of the set.

The reverse design featured a stylised kotuku bird against a rainbow design in the background.

The reverse design of the 20 cents coin featured the HMS Tory, which was used to transport the first group of settlers from England to New Zealand.

The reverse design of the 50 cents coin featured a child and tree, symbolising the planting of 700 000 trees in 1990: one for each child in New Zealand.
