Excellent information on this entrenchment and its role in the Dutch war of independence here. Both parties did extensive damage to the local economy.

I especially liked the story of how the hired soldiers changed sides after they surrendered. Behind that story is one of the principal reasons why the Habsburgs couldn't win back their "Burgundian heritage": the great difficulty of moving coins from Spain to the front lines, having to avoid France a well as the sea route, while the Republic was getting rich by maritime trade.
