I picked up this 1938 Farthing a few weeks ago.  I was quite happy with it

If came back from ANACS grading as cleaned, details

WHat do you think?

IMO, it is of no importance if it was cleaned or not. All coins in museums and quite a few in private collections are cleaned. The reason is obvious. Museums and private collectors collect coins. Not dirt. If dirt obstructs the view, it must go. The issue is not cleaning, but knowing how to clean and when to stop cleaning. That can be learned. We have a whole board on the subject. Personally, I have a stash of worthless, useless coins to practice on.

Your farthing looks good to me. It has a nice, satiny quality with eye appeal and, even more important, all details are clear. The fingerprint is of little importance. As the coin acquires more patina, it will disappear. All that counts is if you are happy with it. Keep in mind that ANACS gets an income from cleaning coins, so them discouraging cleaning is a classic conflict of interest.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

I'm not seeing any harsh cleaning on your coin. Most of it has probably toned over since it was done and has left a nice looking coin for you to enjoy. Those small farthings are very nice coins...have a few of them myself.

I'd like to collect the set.  They are very very nice for a simple coin.  When I get it back from anacs I will post a big image and see how it looks

Based on the photos in the 2x2s it doesn't look cleaned.
I can't say as I'm seeing any obvious signs of cleaning either. It will be interesting to see the picture of the coin after ANACS is finished with it.
