Although I haven't had these coins in hand yet, based on the photos I have seen I really do not like the relief on them. The designs themselves I also find too detailed to make good coin designs.

Why not? Is the relief too low or too high?

Based on the images I feel that the relief is too low in some areas and details, and too high in others. But anyway, I have just ordered this coin series (aswell as a Canadian 'black' ring 2 dollar). Will update with my observations once I have received them.

I do have the set and I would call the execution 'cheap', worse than the old 50 and 100 leone coins minted by the Royal Dutch Mint.

The photos that were used for the portraits on the coins. Interesting that on the design of the 10 cents coin, the golden watch of Sooliman Ernest Rogers was omitted.

I just came across the website of Czech artist Jan Petr. It appears that he did the 3d sculpting for the 10 cents coin, but possibly also other pieces in the series. See at the bottom of the page: http://reliefdesign.eu/.

Earlier today I had contact with the Czech artist Jan Petr, and he informed me that he did the 3d sculpting of all of the coins in the new coin series of Sierra Leone (both sides). I think this is rather unusual as Royal Dutch Mint of course has 2 in-house artists.

Do I understand correctly that you have got firm confirmation that the series was minted by the KNM?

As I have mentioned before, in December of last year there was filmed for a tv program at Royal Dutch Mint and in the video mintmaster Bert van Ravenswaaij was seen holding a large bag of new Sierra Leone coins. When I visited the mint last June, they were also minting for the new coin series of Sierra Leone.
