Civic copper of Tabaristan / demon holding a mace
« on: July 03, 2021, 08:59:24 AM »
Small civic copper from Tabaristan : 18,5mm / 3,93g , likely struck at Qajar period
I wonder if the horned personnage holding a mace couldn't depict the white demon  killed by Rustam during his 7th exploit ? (the "white div")

Dear Saro, I can read the date below letter " B ب " of the word " Zarb ضرب " on right photo; it looks like " 1143 or 1243 ۱۱۴۳ ۱۲۴۳ " which suggests that it was struck during Safavid or Qajar period:
Safavids, Shah Tahmasp II, 1143 AH, Tabaristan mint (AH 1135-1145 / 1722-1732 AD), or
Qajar, Fath 'Ali Shah, 1243 AH, Tabaristan mint (AH 1212-1250 / 1797-1834 AD).
I am in favor of Qajar period " 1243 ۱۲۴۳ ".

Thank you Maythem; yes, it seems that there is a trace of a date which could well ends with "43" as you suggest.
I'm quite sure that from the geometrical cartouche and its weight, this coin  was struck under Qajar and so, 1243 may fit.

Unfortunately, the legend is worned  :'(   : "zarb dar al-mulk tabaristan ضرب دار الملک طبر ستان "

Thank you Saro, under the letter " B ب " of the word " Zarb ضرب " on right photo; I see two digits of the date " 64 ۶۴ ", so the date could be "1264 ۱۲۶۴ " which is still during Qajar era.
