So, when I was there in November the mass transit would take no cash, and neither would any of the museums, not even the Kroller or the Frans Halls.  I only had cash.  The Jazz place took cash Jazz Cafe Alto - so that worked out.  Restaurants ... not usually.  Cabs were OK and I ended up taking a lot of cabs because the mass transit wouldn't take cash.  And the hotel wouldn't take cash either.

Strange – here in the euro area I do carry some cash, for small purchases (Christmas market, food stand in the street, etc.). But when I go to a non-euro country these days, I hardly ever have cash with me. Would have to buy it at a bank or forex place first. So at some point I may withdraw a little cash at my destination, but that is about it.

Have not been to the Kröller-Müller and Frans Hals museums lately; may be that neither of them accepts cash. Then again, I often buy tickets in advance these days (had to do that during the pandemic restrictions, because we had to book time slots) and pay with a card then anyway. For public transport you will primarily use the OV chipkaart or some visitor pass, but there are places (at least there were a few weeks ago ;) ) where you can buy those using cash.

Back to counterfeiting ... from what I have read, counterfeiters have become more "active" now that people go out and gather again (more than during the restrictions). Of course habits have changed, i.e. cash is used less, but there are still places – see my first sentence – where it is quite common. Here are the German Bundesbank stats for 2022, in English, published a few days ago. Now all this may be different in NL, but products made by a ring of Dutch counterfeiters may very well show up in the neighborhood too. ;)

I lost my bank card and had nothing but Euro's on me.   Try it one day.  You'll see what I mean quickly enough.  Most placed in Amsterdam will not take cash, but there are significant exceptions.

As for the counterfeiting, I believe you when you post it is happening, but I still scratch my head at counterfeiting 2 Euro coins.  You can load a pickup truck of them and it would hardly be worth it.

In the US, nearly all counterfeits of 50s or 100 dollar bills, and a few twenties by amateurs.

In July 2021, a man was caught who had brought into circulation the dateless fakes that are being discussed in this topic, in Leeuwarden. The man had exchanged fakes at a gas station for banknotes, and in 2 drugstores he had bought Paysafe cards with the fake coins. In April 2022, he was sentenced to 3 months imprisonment, of which 2 months suspended.

The judiciary published an article about the case here.

A money mule, a sad case full of personal problems. This is not the man who made the 'coins'.

In earlier times, though, those forgers would have been boiled in oil.

Just received a fake 2 Euro Netherlands (Beatrix) without a date as change by the local AH (supermarket).. I could remember that there was a topic about this specific fake.. but can't find it.
Anyway, another nice addition to the collection..  8)

Really nice find! Not as rare as the French fake that you reported earlier though, that is still the only piece that I have ever seen of that type.

I have moved your message to the correct topic. In the near future, there will also be specific topics showing an overview of all fake 2 euro coins of France and the Netherlands, which will also include your finds.

I can make better photos from both if needed..
For the records, this one is also from the Alkmaar region..
