The portrait was made by American artist Joel Iskowitz. He made it for the Commonwealth Mint. It is also being used on coins of Alderney.

I guess the reason for the letters XUJL being incuse (just like Alan Turing's name) has something to do with this:

"Your chance to be a top-secret Codebreaker: Your Alan Turing Fifty Pence Coin contains a secret code. Use the code to reveal a secret message. If you solve this test of cryptanalyst perseverance, your efforts will be rewarded with an exclusive Codebreakers medal. Details will be sent with your coin".

This is the first heptagonal 50 pence issued in the name of TDC. The territory issued the first collector 50 pence in 1987, but that one and every one prior to the Turing issue were crown-sized: approximately 38 mm in diameter. All TDC issues are collector coins only, of course. TDC uses UK coinage, but tourists have managed to 'circulate' some earlier TDC collectors coins.

It would be useful to know details of the silver-plated alloy. It is not given and I suspect it would be low-grade.

To me, along with the Ascension 'Wind in the Willows' issue, they are on the 'do not buy list.'

I was sent these instructions for the code breaker on the coins. I have corrected them as I found that there was a mistake in them. The word on the first coin is apparently 'make'.
