Aurangzeb Rupee. Mint Surat - help with year/RY
« on: January 05, 2021, 12:54:04 AM »
The full-year that typically sits in the 'Gaf' is missing. RY is 1X.

The partial second digit on the regnal year looks like it could be a 1, 2, 3, or 4. This would put the date at AH 1078-1081. If you can identify the KM # of the rupee, it might help to check which regnal years are reported in Krause for that coin.

In these early types - some how KM shows only one type, the AH date is at 9 o'clock position. I believe with the coin in hand, you may be able to read it. The AH is 1X at 1 o'clock on the reverse.

Not exactly a sharp eye but knowledge gained over the years and my passion (read obsession) with the coinage of the mint in Gujarat.

KM is a good reference for basic information. However, a general catalogue can go just so far. It is then for the detailed catalogue (one of which is in the works) for small details. Aurangzeb Surat should have around 5 or 6 varieties.
