I have since acquired an octagonal NCS (the Naval Canteen Service) uniface token reading NCS TEA MUG TOKEN 6d.

Thank you, Mal. An important contribution to this board, with an impressive listing of tokens. I find the recently acquired mug token especially interesting, since it is of a different character: I imagine it would be used as in Dutch schools, for those who hadn't brought their own mug.

Yes and probably used by visiting sailors and other guests who upon returning the mug along with the token would get their sixpence refunded.
