Cayman Islands, 5 cents.

Above you see the reverse design of a Cayman Islands' circulation 5 cents.

It depicts a species of prawn (Litopenaeus setiferus).

The design was the work of the late Stuart Devlin.

Lobster design by Stuart Devlin.

I am grateful to the Royal Mint Museum for this image of an alternative 5 cents design.

Also by Stuart Devlin, it depicts a lobster.

A larger image of the same design.

Numismatic artists so often produce designs as though for a square or rectangular space.

Stuart Devlin was highly critical of this approach.

He liked his coin designs to reflect the circular space that they occupied.

He's got a point. The design following the curvature of the coin is very appealing. I like these designs. Were they unadopted patterns then?

Yes, the lobster was unadopted. The prawn was used instead. Both animals are crustaceans, so they look similar in certain respects.
